On 23rd of October, Kinvara resident Paul Mulligan will travel to Gonaives in Haiti with over 250 volunteers to take part in Haven’s second “Build it Week” Gonaives is a city in the north west of Haiti. It has a population of about 105,000 people and was not affected by the recent earthquake. It was however very badly affected by a series of hurricanes over the last five years. In September 2004, Hurricane Jean caused major flooding and mud slides in the city. Buildings and homes were badly damaged by the storm and approximately 2,000 people are believed to have died. Following that in 2008, the city was again devastated by Hurricane Hanna. Having lost their homes and loved ones, thousands were forced to find refuge elsewhere. Some people slept on the roofs of their houses in an effort to safeguard their belongings. Others built makeshift shelters and camps on higher ground, unaffected by flooding. The people of Gonaives are living in primitive conditions to this day. The Haven Partnership has acquired 6 hectares/15 acres of land, on the outskirts of the city of Gonaives. Currently there is very little by way of community facilities in the area. The long term plan is to build homes, schools, and hospitals as part of the development. Haven is the first organization to begin their building programme in the area. The site will be turned into a tented village for the duration of the build, with all volunteers sleeping in military style tented accommodation. With your help Haven plans to build 300 homes in Haiti this year. Paul needs to raise a minimum of €4500 for this trip to pay for building materials, food, and travel expenses for the trip.
