"Quid-Pro-Quo" From Salem Ma

Postby HiberniaX » Fri Mar 05, 2010 9:36 am

My name is Dave Mullin: from Salem, Massachusetts. And I am the Owner of the Salem Quill Co.
A small home-based tradtional craft/curio manufacturing business, Which has been steadly growing (even during the current reccession) since its founding in MMVII 2007.

I came up with this crazy idea for trading gift type items one rainy windy night while watching the promo video for the Cruinniu Na Bmad and decided it was time to venture over to the west coast of Ireland.

I'm planing on heading over to Kinvara for the Hooker races in August, but only forabout a week because its my busy season here in Salem, and The Witches and tourist that come to Salem gotta have their Brooms & Wands. (Thank you Harry Potter (TM)

I'll explain, I own and operate a Traditional craft business.

I will be posting items on my website "salemquill.com" for consideration. When folks sends me an offer of a LOT all the offers and post the current leader and and once closed announce the winner, i will need nothing but a name the day before, i get on the plane to Ireland so I can deliver trade items, and they will be made especially for the winner of that lot.

For Example: you have a old bicycle that you dont use while im their I wouldl like to explore the area, that would be a goosd trade for me having access to a bike small things like that, The whole idea for this is to have fun, and meet people and learn what I can.

Although unusual, this trade is legit, no money just simple handmade gits, so it begins I hope to meet some of you folks in a couple of months.

NO MONEY,CREDIT CARD INFO OR PERSONAL INFO SHOULD NEVER EVER BE SENT TO ANY EMAIL OR REAL ADRESSS CALlING THAT THEY ARE ME OF CONNCECTED WITH MY IDEAS. SO PLEASE DO NOT BE STUDIP....SEND NO MONEY SEND NO CREDIT CARD INFO.

ALL GIFT EXCHANGES WILL BE IN PERSON IN kINVARA

I CANNOT STRESS THAT ENOUGH SEND NOTHING ( emails/phone only

What I would really like to "sail the rail off" of a Galway hooker, but just to take a real upclose look at one would also be great
and Ive always be facinated by the currurghs.

This is Not for any one onder under 21 and nothing illeagal of anykind.....

I am doing this, just to try it, and also to lay some groundwork before I get come over for the races,
and finally the bigest reason, Its just plain fun,

So this is where It gets interesting.
So let the games begin March 5, 2010 at 3:00 am
Offer Ends on August 1 2010,
Best Reagrds

Hello, Im Still working on getting my Cruinniu2010 page at the salemquill.com website up and going. >Old dog > New trick > I think you might be able to see the problem.
I never quite mastered pasteing url's and linking sites But, everything in it's own time... it should be up for the final time, this week

Now to the Post...

I have a question about local History/building traditions in the Galway/Kinvara Area: In alot of coastal areas prone to shipwrecks, Local people would gather (beachcombers) what ever part of the wreckage that they saw valuable including the lumber from the hull of the wrecked ship.
In Massachusettes it was common( and still is) for beachcombers to gather the materails washed up after storms,in the old days it was sometimes used to build the local dorys, chebbacco boats, and schooner out of this type of wood,
But our local folklore/ legends say thier were alot of ships deemed cursed or unlucky due to the nature of the woods origins. and those boats built had "Happenings " ie ghost/magical stories.

(1) Are their any stories/ tales regarding lumber from wrecked vessels ever used in the constuction of the Galway Hookers?
(2) Are their still beachcomers people/culture in Ireland today?
(3) can you light peat/turf with a flint and steel?
(4) if damp does peat/turf? require an excellerant? like parrifin, whale or seal oil to ignite?
(5) Are there any local stories traditions in western Irelans concerning lightning?
(6) Were the Hookers ever used to smuggle goods or for food transport during the famine? ( any sites book or web source?)
,
This information is for a childrens /young adult short story project I am working on, with one of the goals being is to intoduce "Irish" into the book, with a phentically spelled English pronouciation next to it. Im Hoping to help reintroduce in a fashio the irish language back to Eastern Massachusetts boston/salem in this series of stories and learn a little myself in the process.

I am generating a list of words that i will hope to translate phetetically for this project.

Thier in fact my be books avaliable, but i do not know where to find them.

You can respond her at the the Kinvara post or at cruinniu2010@gmail.com

If you can answer any of these or give me a point to where I might look I would be gratefull.
Their is a set of "Salem" pen and ink prints in it for you in August for a proper-useable anwser.

Thanx

Hello, The cruinniu2010 page at salemquill.com is coming together.......

I Posted a video on the Page of a remarkable Vermont man named Ben who ran one of the last watepowered woodmills in the state of Vermont in New England. This film was made back in the 1980's before he died. for the Vermont Board of education

This man was truly a unique Craftsman/Artisan and if you watch this, you might understand better the nature of my request.

There is also another video on youtube about Ben, building a timber hauling sled that is Amazing. And you might be a little bit wiser after watching him, I certainly was. He was simple, honest and direct, the perfect teacher.... After his death his mill and dam fell into disrepair and were almost lost, But due to these of films and the knowledge he left, The local community and the state, have now begun restoring his mill as a working/teaching shop.

Enjoy...

Best Regards
